Over the years, new layers of sphagnum moss accumulated on top of one another, resulting in a peat layer averaging 10 metres in thickness in the upper part of the Mohos. In 2019, specialists extracted a 9.5-metre-long core sample, and the oldest part of the peat layer proved to be 10,800 years old.
